09/25/14:::::::Michael Shoop Leads Team “Quack Heads” to Victory in Team Challenge

Last Saturday, racers at MIR participated in a mini bracket finals style event. Racers formed teams of 8 racers, across all classes, to compete all other teams present. The entry fee for the team challenge was just $20 a racer, with 100% payback, where the winning team gets 70% of the purse with the second place team receiving 30%. Also, this race marked the final day to qualify for The Dash in Top and Mod for the 1/8th mile points series.
As far as the Team Challenge went, team Quack Heads was one of just two teams to get all 8 team members into round 2. The team, made up of all Top ET racers, lost 3 racers in round 2. In round 3, they lost two more, leaving just 3 racers. But when all 3 of them won in round 4, they took a commanding point lead. In round 5, the three Quack Heads remaining, Charles Link, Michael Shoop, and Steve Morgret all managed to miss having to race each other, when Link was drawn for the bye. Morgret was paired up with Jeff Groat from team Fun Bunch. Fun Bunch entered round 5 with Groat as their last team member standing...

09/11/14:::::::2014 Autofab Raider ET Series Points Battles Shaping Up

This past weekend, MIR hosted the 3rd of 4 two race weekends for the 2014 Autofab Racecars Raider ET Series. The event, which draws cars from all around the DC, Richmond area, is the biggest big money bracket series in the Mid Atlantic. More than 440 different racers have participated in the 6 events held thus far over all three classes. This past weekend, with threatening weather forecasted for Saturday afternoon and evening, the plan was set that any racing that was unable to be completed, would be run on Sunday. But before that could even be considered, many racers showed up early on Friday night to take their shot at collecting some quick cash in some Hi-Roller races.

08/15/14:::::::Door Car Vets Bob Patton and Jeffrey Jones Win Top ET at Raider ET Series

Another big weekend of bracket racing at Maryland Int’l Raceway is in the books. This past weekend, MIR hosted it annual $10K/$2K Poker Bash where big money was at stake in all classes, including Junior Dragster where racers could take home $500+ each day as well. In what is becoming a new tradition at MIR leading up to a big money bracket race, racers had a chance to pick up some early cash during the Friday night Test and Tune. In 4 different Hi-Roller races, several drivers were able to kick start their weekend and line their pockets with some quick cash.

08/12/14:::::::Robert Jones Wins 2014 Rick’s Jewelers Ring for the Queen

The Rick’s Jewelers Ring for the Queen program in the Speed Unlimited ET Series rewards the drivers across the series in its 4 classes for perfection. A perfect reaction time or running dead on your dial in any bogie or elimination round, qualifies you for a diamond point. The time slip from the run where the diamond point was earned, must be verified and initialed by a tower official before the end of racing that day. In previous seasons, the first ET Series racer to accumulate 5 diamond points was declared the winner, and received a diamond solitaire ring valued at $9,600. However, for the 2014 season, the magic number was raised to 6 diamond points.

07/29/14:::::::Fenton, Bodmer, Spicer and Reynolds Claim Poker Bash $10K, $2K Victories

06/26/14:::::::Lecates, Shoop and Parlett Take Home $5K Victories at $5K Triple Header

MIR kicked off the summer with the opening weekend of the 1/8th mile Speed Unlimited ET Series and their annual Top ET $5K Triple Header. With a threatening forecast for both Friday and Saturday, many racers may have been skeptical that the entire event could be completed, but all racing was completed by 6:30 Sunday evening, even with a rain storm washing out Saturday’s race in 2nd round of Top and Mod. Even though the points races and main event didn’t start until Saturday morning, big money racing got started on Friday night, with the Hi-Roller races held during the test and tune. Four hi-roller races were contested, a Mod ET race, Junior Dragster, and a $100 entry fee Top ET race, and a $200 Top ET race.

06/19/14:::::::Multiple Local Racers Take Home IHRA Ironmen at President’s Cup

The IHRA Nitro Jam tour descended upon Budds Creek, MD and Maryland Int’l Raceway this past weekend for the return of the President’s Cup Nationals, with some of the toughest sportsman racers in the country in tow. The national event brought competitors from all up and down the east coast to MIR with hopes of picking up a revered, IHRA Ironman trophy. But for many of these traveling racers, they encountered a major problem on the MIR quarter-mile; the local MIR racers. Many of the weekend’s winners came from southern Maryland, or are MIR regulars in the Speed Unlimited ET Series, who were just testing their abilities against some of the nation’s best class racers. At the end of the weekend, 18 Sportsman Ironmen were handed out, with MIR regulars taking home half of them. Once again, the regular bracket racers from MIR proved that they are anything but average.

04/17/14:::::::Top Sportsman Pro’s Reign Again at Door Wars

After a successful debut in 2013, the Top Sportsman Pro’s vs. Joe’s concept returned to MIR for the 2014 edition of Door Wars. Following the same format from last year, Top Sportsman racers from all over the Mid-Atlantic came to MIR for two shots at a $5,000 payday. The Pro’s vs. Joe’s structure attracts dedicated Top Sportsman drivers and quick bracket door cars as well. The Pro’s vs. Joe’s structure still places an emphasis on being quick, where the top 16 qualifiers are immediately placed on the “Pro’s” ladder, and have two main advantages over the “Joe’s”. The first advantage is, qualifying for the Pro’s guarantees a minimum of a $100 payday, as compared to the Joe’s, who have to race down to 16 or less cars to make it to the money round. And second advantage is, the Pro’s only have to go 5 rounds for $5,000, whereas the Joe’s could have to win as many as 8 rounds to capture that same prize, depending on car count. Another popular feature of the Pro’s vs. Joe’s race is re-entry, which is seldom seen in a Top Sportsman race. All first round runners-up, Pro’s and Joe’s, have a common re-entry round, where winners in re-entry move into round 2 of the Joe’s race. The winner of each ladder, Pro’s and Joe’s, receives $2,000, and the two ladder winners face off for a $3,000 bonus for a $5,000 payday.

04/09/14:::::::Track Champs Smith, Milstead and Hubbell Win at 2014 Speed Unlimited ET Series Kickoff

On Saturday April 4th, the Speed Unlimited ET Series took to the MIR quarter mile to kickoff the 2014 bracket racing season. After a long, cold winter, many racers were making their 2014 debuts, with new cars and combinations to be found all around the pits. With all the new hardware around, Royce Miller opted to allow all racers to get a bonus time run, to help everyone work out the kinks. At the end of the day, current and former track champs reigned supreme yet again, as they were able to survive round after round to take home the first Irontree Trophies of the season.

The Autofab Raider Series is a regional, 4 weekend, 8 race series that takes place at 3 different venues, Virginia Motorsports Park, Richmond Dragway and Maryland Int’l Raceway. The2013 Autofab Raider Junior Dragster champ is Christopher Mattera. Mattera won 3 of the 8 races contested, but none were more important than the last race of the year at his home track of MIR. Christopher had been entangled in a points battle with Jacob Baker that came down to the very last round. Baker had an 18 point lead heading into the semifinals, where he and Mattera met up. Mattera got the best of Baker to pull within one round of the lead with one round to go. Mattera clinched the championship when his opponent turned it -.001 red in the final.

01/07/14:::::::“The Dash” Speed Unlimited Championship Playoffs Return for 2014 & Beyond

"The Dash" Speed Unlimited ET Series Championships Playoff format is exciting and well received. It will remain the championship format at MIR for many years to come. To qualify for the playoffs, a racer must finish in the top 10 in points in their respective class. Each of the top 10 qualifiers will then go into a 4-race Playoff for their class championship. “The Dash” will be run very similar to NHRA’s Countdown with points earned through the regular season of April to September to try to qualify for a Top 10 finish and a spot in "The Dash" Speed Unlimited Championship Playoffs.
