SIGN THELMA PEACOE'S GET WELL CARD

HOME

On Saturday, March 13th, Thelma Peacoe known at MIR as "Mom, Mrs. P., Short Stuff, Grandma, and Royce's Mom" fell at the track and broke her hip.  She was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital and underwent orthopedic surgery on her left hip.  The operation entailed the insertion of a pin and rod in her upper femur.  The operation was a success, and Mrs. P. is in good spirits and resting comfortably.

This picture was taken on Monday, March 15th. Mrs. Peacoe is recuperating and has already started physical therapy. She is extremely thankful for the support of her extended family at MIR. On Saturday after her surgery while still highly sedated (haha), she joked around saying, "I need a helicopter to come and pick me up so I can go back to the track and work!" Her attitude has been very positive, she's been doing her exercises and has been eating very well.

UPDATE - Friday, March 19th - On Thursday, Mrs. Peacoe was taken by ambulance from her rehab center to the ER at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.  She rapidly developed pneumonia which gave her congestive heart failure.  She is now in the intensive care unit at the hospital, and while her condition is very serious, she is starting to breathe better and is somewhat conscious of what is happening around her.

Please keep Thelma in your hearts and prayers as she tries to make it through this very difficult time.  She's strong willed as many of you know, but the next 48 hours is extremely critical.  May God bless her and help her through this difficult stage.

We would like to thank EVERYONE for showing their support.  On Wednesday before all of this happened, she was able to read your comments and you can't imagine what it has done for her spirits.

Thank you once again and please keep her in your prayers.

UPDATE - Monday, March 22nd - Mrs. P spent two days in the ICU and is now doing much better.  Her doctors plan on returning her to the rehab center by the end of the week.  Thank you all very much for your support and prayers, they have truly helped!

UPDATE - Wednesday, March 24th - Today, Mrs Peacoe was moved back to her rehab center in Fairfax (Manor Care).  Her oxygen has now been reduced and she is able to move around with her walker.  Her entire attitude is extremely positive and it really shows in the picture to the left.   She greatly enjoys reading the comments posted daily by her family and friends of MIR, and she PROUDLY displays them in her room for all her nurses, doctors, visitors and any other staff to see.   Your support is sincerely appreciated by Mrs. P, and we believe that it had a strong impact on her road to recovery.  Thank you once again and God bless each of you for your prayers and support in helping her get better.

UPDATE - Friday, April 2nd - Mrs. Peacoe's pneumonia has relapsed.  She was moved today back into INOVA Fairfax Hospital from her rehab center.  This is her second battle with this terrible infection since her incident, and while it is not yet as severe as the first, her condition is becoming less stable due to her age and ability to continue fighting it off.

Please continue to keep her in your prayers so that she can get past this difficult road to recovery.  Thank you again very much for your support.

UPDATE - Tuesday, April 6th - Mrs. Peacoe's condition has seriously deteriorated.  She is now back in intensive care fighting a second battle with severe pnuemonia on lungs greatly damaged from the first.  She is also fighting congestive heart failure for the third time and she now has an infection in her lower abdomen.   They are trying their best to keep her lungs free of fluid build up, and she has become very lethargic in the past few days.  She's also somewhat incoherent as to what is happening around her and is unable to speak due to the fluid in her lungs.

Please continue to keep her in your prayers at this most critical moment in time.  Her energy is almost completely depleted and the doctors are saying her body is too weak to try to fight back.  Thank you for keeping her in your thoughts and your hearts as she struggles to make it through this crucial stage.  We have faith that she can and will make it through this, we just need everyone to take a moment to say a prayer for her...  Thank you again.

UPDATE - Wednesday, April 7th - Mrs. Peacoe has now been put on life support in the Intensive Care Unit.  She is suffering from pnuemonia, congestive heart failure, a bowel infection and a swollen esophagus which is causing fluid to continue seeping into her lungs.  She has also suffered from a mild heart attack.  Please continue to keep her in your prayers

UPDATE - Monday, April 12th - Mrs. Peacoe underwent surgery on Friday to insert feeding tubes into her stomach and intestine.  Up until this point, she was fed through a feeding tube that went through her nose down into her stomach - in addition to the breathing tubes in her mouth that go into her lungs.  Her operation was successful, however she developed a blood infection.

UPDATE - Tuesday, April 13th - Her blood results are better this morning and the internal bleeding has slowed down.  She has made a small 5% decrease in the assistance of the ventilator which is now at 75% - meaning she is doing 25% of her own breathing, so we'll take today as a good day so far...

UPDATE - Monday, April 19th - Her condition is showing no sign of progress and the medicines are causing problems with her blood pressure.  After an unimaginable family meeting this morning, all of her doctors decided that her body is too weak at this point and her options are exhausted.  At noon today, she was given morphine and taken off of the life support system.

3:30 pm, April 19th, 2004 - Mrs. Peacoe has passed from her pain and suffering.

Visiting MIR has always been more about seeing family then racing. Mrs. P. made each member of the MIR family feel welcome and seeing her each week left us with a warm feeling. This weekend's memorial at MIR was a beautiful remebrance and made me realize that I'll always think of the gateway road into MIR as Peacoe Road and her spirit will remain to welcome us into MIR. We will cherish her always and lovingly pass her into God's arms, where I'm confident she's working the gate. Ken Peppard, Dumfries, Virginia

Royce, Linda, Jason, Chris and Ashley, I am truly sorry for your loss. Ms.P was a wonderful person to be around. I remember when I first started working at the track and I worked a gate with her. She made me feel so comfortable, she was always there if you needed help. She could always make you laugh. She had a way of making everyone feel special. I will definetly miss seeing her on race day and hearing her voice calling on the radio and I will miss pulling up to the gate and hearing her say hows the baby I want to see him. Ms. P was so good at what she did GOD decided to take her away from her pain and suffering and took her home to have her work the pearly gates of HEAVEN! Your all in my thoughts and prayers! Linda and Family, I just wanted to remind you that I understand the overwhelming, and at times, unbearable grief you are feeling. I had to say goodbye to my Mom. Grandmas passing will naturally leave a massive hole in our hearts, but we also need to celebrate her life. What I remember most about her is: Sometime I would watch her work a gate, and she would flash me a mischievous little grin, eyebrows raised, and a twinkle in her eyes. It was as though she had a little secret that kept her perpetually amused. It always made me smile. (indeed, I am smiling now as I think of it!) For a woman as petite as Grandma, her presence was HUGE! She was not about to be intimated by a racer, crew member, or fan. Remember when someone tried to drive in without paying....and this tiny woman came flying out of the pit gate and pointed to the car as if to say "STOP!"....AND THEY DID!! She was quite a woman. I loved her, and I love you too. Kathy

There is no solice that can ease the heartache of the passing of a loved one but in the days hereafter know that her spirit will always be present. In the silence of her life I hope there is comfort in knowing that her vast rememberance has provided an existence to an amazingly warm family of her own children, grand children, great grand children, friends, and more. Grandma, as I stood beside your bed again tonight among all of the monitors, IV's, tubes and every other piece of equipment they have hooked up to you, I couldn't help but think of how strong you are. Every time I've seen you in the past, I've been strong - trying to find a happy place so you don't see or feel like I'm losing hope. It's easy to say "hang in there, you can fight it," but seeing you there tonight on life support hit me like a brick wall - and for the first time I broke down in front of you. As I stood there, trying to block out the noise of all of the beeps and the breathing machines and everything else, I tried to regain my composure and talk to you. I don't know if you heard me or not, because your eyes were open and fully glazed over in a blank stare, but as I talked to you I couldn't help but notice that they almost seemed to water just a bit. I wanted so badly to hold your hand, skin to skin, without having to wear the gowns and gloves they require us to wear to go in your room - but I knew why we had to. As I talked to you more, all I could think about was how brave you are to keep fighting like you do. Looking deep into your eyes, I knew you were in there somewhere just screaming to break out of all of this and prove once again that you're a trooper and that NOTHING will stop you. You are battling a combination of illnesses that many people would have already given up on. But I know you... You will never, ever give up - you are too strong for that. I want to tell everyone something you did last night just so they see how strong you really are. My father and I went in her room, with our hospital gowns and gloves on. This was before she was put on life support, but after they had the tubes put down into her lungs to assist her breathing instead of the machine doing all of her breathing like now. Both of us stood beside her bed and at that time, she was somewhat conscious. She lifted her terribly weak arm and pointed at both of us, then pointed at her chin. We kept guessing as to what she was trying to convey to us, but each time we were wrong because she communicated with her eyes and subtle movements of her head. The nurse that was in the room asked if her if she was in pain and a series of other questions, and brave Mrs. P kept moving her eyes no. Well, my dad got a piece of paper and we asked her if she thought she'd be able to write a word to help tell us understand what she needed. With a little patience and a lot of love, she scribbled the word that we guessed was "mask". We asked her if the tubes in her mouth were bothering her (thinking that maybe she thought it was a mask), and again she pointed at us. Then we asked if she wanted to know if we needed masks, she responded with her eyes indicating yes. Her type of pneumonia isn't contagious, but she doesn't know that. As she laid there, with IV's going in every possible place, a huge breathing tube going down her throat with wires inside it, unable to speak, adhesive sensors all over her body, and everything else... SHE WAS WORRIED ABOUT US! It was definitely an intense moment for both my father and I seeing her there worrying about us. I love you so much Grandma, you're one of a kind, and I'm DAMN proud to be your grandson! Love Always and Forever, Chris
