Bob Maxey
Racer

Bob Maxey, the famed driver of the Clinton Shaker series of Pontiacs, helped to put the Southern Maryland area and bracket racing on the map in the late 1970s. As one of a handful of the top proponents of this new style of drag racing, Maxey led the way in the acceptance of the racing format that essentially saved drag racing at the weekly participant level. With drag racers being able to select their own performance levels (thus saving untold thousands of dollars in speed development costs), they now had to identify ways of making their cars more consistent. Maxey tackled the consistency issue and made bracket racing a science, introducing many innovations that replaced guesswork with solid theory and practical application.

Not content in keeping the technology to himself, Bob shared his expertise by building racing engines and setting up race cars for other participants. Many racers rode Maxey power and tune-ups to success. In addition to his more famous on track exploits, Bob Maxey made perhaps one of the most important and lasting contributions to MIR. He poured the starting line that has provided such incredible traction over the years! Using his own specially formulated concrete mixture, Maxey provided the incredible bite of the MIR starting line that is regarded as one of the best in the industry, leading to countless records and best performances each year. While the Clinton Shaker’s racing successes are a part of history, Bob Maxey’s touch is felt by every racer who explodes off the legendary MIR starting line!
