The
2009 Speed Unlimited ET Series
kicked off the season in April with
a double-header weekend that
featured qualifying for a special
event called the “Pick Royce’s
Pocket Challenge”. This is the
second year for this successful
event - one that gives drivers a
chance to pick Royce’s pocket and
win FREE car and driver entry at all
ET events until mid-season! After
weeks of repeated rainouts, the race
was finally completed this past
Saturday, May 16th, at the Mountain
Motor Nationals.
First up was Junior Dragster driver
Patrick Estevez Jr. of White Plains,
Maryland. Prior to his run in front
of thousands upon thousands of fans,
Royce asked the eight year old
rookie if he was at all nervous; he
replied with a long and winded “No”
(but we’re almost sure he had to be
white-knuckling the steering wheel).
Unfortunately, Patrick broke out on
his run with a 12.97 on a 13.03
dial.
Next up was Motorcycle ET rider
Chris Clontz of Mechanicsville,
Maryland. Under the watchful eye of
his wife Kelly whom he narrowly held
off for the chance to pick Royce’s
pocket, he dialed a 9.25. In an
attempt to get in his head, Royce
insisted he was going to break out.
As it turned out Royce was right, as
Chris went too quick running a 9.21.
The next qualifier, Johnny Burch,
was driving a different car than the
one he qualified in. He put a 9.61
on the boards for his dial-in.
However, like the two racers before
him, he also broke out running a
9.59.
With three down and only one to go,
Royce is now sporting a fearless
grin from ear to ear as he motions
up the fourth and final qualifier,
Tommy Cable of Waldorf, Maryland.
Like a brass and overly confident
gladiator in ancient Rome, Miller
tries to intimidate Cable in his
coliseum of thousands of attentive
fans! Rising to the challenge and
ready to play, Cable officially
stated his dial of 8.03. With his
Racetech dragster fully staged, the
tree came down and it was zero to
Royce’s wallet in exactly (you
guessed it...) 8.03 seconds!
All four competitors made a run for
Royce’s money but in the end only
one could get his hands on it.
Congratulations once again to Tommy
Cable for his “Pick Royce’s Pocket”
triumph of 2009!
