The annual Ironman Classic was held
at Maryland Int’l Raceway on
Saturday, May 9, 2009. Not only were
Ironmans given away to the winners
of each class, but a little extra
cash went home with one lucky racer
before the night was over. Joe
Rollins out of La Plata, Maryland,
made a rare perfect run during
second round of eliminations in Top
ET. The race had to be shortened to
an 1/8-mile because of two rain
delays. Dialing a 5.89, the driver
did his job on the tree with a
perfect light in his 1992 Mustang.
After that, the car did its job;
when the 514 ci big block Ford
powered Mustang crossed the stripe
exactly 5.890 seconds later.
Not only did Joe get his hands on
the cool $1,000 bounty from F&F Auto
Service Inc., but he also picked up
two diamond points on that run (in
an effort to win yet another
incentive program for MIR points
members – the Rick’s Jewelers Ring
for the Queen). And Joe wasn’t done
yet; in the very next round, he came
back and ran dead on with a zero
again to claim yet another diamond
point. Three diamond points in one
night instantly makes him a
front-runner for the ring.
Frank Pumphrey of F&F Auto Service
Inc. in Clinton, MD
(www.fandfautoserviceinc.com) has
posted the $1,000 bounty for several
years now. Frank is a long time
points contender at MIR. His
longtime support of the Speed
Unlimited ET Series is greatly
appreciated by all racers, and now
most especially by Joe Rollins. For
Joe, the perfect run couldn’t have
come at a better time. The motor
that was obviously deadly consistent
expired just three runs later, when
the crank broke. He, like any
typical racer, will now spend the
extra cash on a new motor for his
race car. Special thanks goes out to
Frank Pumphrey and F&F Auto Service
Inc. for their continued support of
the local racers; and
congratulations once again to Joe
Rollins for making a perfect run and
picking up the F&F $1,000 Bounty!
