Maryland Int’l Raceway held its
annual Top ET $5K Double Header on
Saturday, June 13, 2009. With two
races to run in the same day, along
with the entire Speed Unlimited ET
Series program, the action started
early. There was great turnout of
Top ET racers for the day, with 116
cars making the call for first round
in the first race (the total count
jumps to more than 160 when you add
re-entry).
The competition was both tough and
feverish throughout the afternoon.
Then as the dust began to settle,
two 5-second dragsters and two door
cars emerged from what seemed to be
an endless multitude of 4 second
dragsters; proving once again that
virtually any combination can
effectively win a bracket race.
In the semi-final round, Joe Wood
Jr. and Will Kivett (two of MIR’s
Top ET points members) were still
making their bids for that $5,000
cash purse. Second up was Paul
Yeager in his trusty Vega paired
with the dragster of Mike Harbaugh.
It ended up being an all dragster
final as Kivett knocked out Wood Jr.
followed by Harbaugh’s elimination
of Yeager. Then in the final round,
Kivett took the win in his
distinctive all-black dragster due
solely to his reaction time; as both
drivers were exactly 2-over with a
zero.
The second race was not so fortunate
as a fast moving storm barreled its
way through at approximately 10:00
pm. With only a limited amount of
time left to run (not to mention the
storm’s intensity and drying time
that would be required), race
officials had no choice but to call
the race after 3rd round for the 25
cars left in competition. The
remaining purse was then evenly
split among those drivers.
If the storm was not in the picture
however, this race would have easily
been run to a completion before the
1:00 am curfew. Nick Chiles took the
win in Junior Dragster; Modified ET
and Motorcycle ET were both already
in late rounds when the race was
called. The entire event was a great
success nonetheless. We would like
to thank each of you for your
support and participation in the $5K
Top ET Double Header, and look
forward to seeing you at the next
race!
