Webster's Dictionary defines a
legend as a person or thing that
inspires. There were no shortage of
legends at the rescheduled 3rd
annual Legends of Budds Creek on
November 10th. With cars and stars
from drag racing's early days, fans
and racers came from all over to
celebrate the sport that we all know
and love dearly. With names such as
MIR Hall of Famers Bunny Burkett,
Dick "Daddy Warbucks" Estevez,
Johnny Rocca, former MIR owner Bill
Cairns, Charlie Yingling and many
others, this day proved that the
historic past of Maryland
International Raceway and drag
racing is just as important as its
present and future.
Bunny
Burkett got behind the wheel of her
cotton candy corvette funny car and
worked her way through the Wild
Bunch field to take on legendary
racer and old friend, the Flying
Tomato, Bob White. At the flash of
green, both drivers left together
until Bob lost traction at 60 feet
and Bunny cruised to victory, much
to the delight of her crew and the
thousands of fans in attendance.
Being the true legend and sportsman
that she is, Bunny requested that
Bob stand in the Winner's Circle
along with her as current MIR
President and owner Royce Miller
presented Bunny with the Irontree
Trophy. Congratulations to all the
race winners and Hall of Fame
inductees, who have truly inspired
all involved in the sport, to take
it to new heights.
