Double Take Double Take

April 15, 2013

The second race of the 2013 Speed Unlimited ET Series was anything but a normal race. It seems that the number 2 was on every racer’s mind. As racers try to keep up momentum from opening weekend or try to gain ground in points, doubles seemed to be the order of the day.

BRIAN MCLAUGHLIN
MODIFIED ET WINNER

Brian McLaughlin, coming off of his second first round loss in consecutive weekends in the Midnight Madness Series, tried to accomplish a very rare feat, in winning both Top ET & Mod ET not only in the same race, but driving the same car. Making it to the final in both classes, the 3 time MIR champion looked to once again add his name to the already historic MIR history books.

TOMMY LAGO
TOP ET WINNER

However Tommy Lago rose to the occasion in Top ET by winning his first race since a rained shortened event several years ago. Keep in mind that McLaughlin was still alive in Mod ET, as the outcome this time around would be different. He faced long-time friend and fellow racer Jake Milstead, who himself was attempting to win both classes, driving both his dragster and his newly acquired Ford Mustang. Unfortunately for Milstead, this one was decided on the starting line as he went .009 red and giving Brian the win. All was not lost for Jake as he moved into a tie with 2008 Mod ET Track champion Mike Jackson for the Mod ET points lead.

TJ ESTEVEZ
JUNIOR DRAGSTER WINNER

Hubble Motorsports has long been a supporter of the Jr dragster class, the future stars of drag racing. New this year is the Hubble Motorsports Pro Purse. With a $10 entry fee and 100% payback to the winner, the driver entering the Pro Purse who goes the furthest in eliminations wins. For the second race in a row (do you see a theme here), the Pro Purse was actually higher than the main race purse itself. It doesn’t stop there, as also for the second straight race, one of Karen Estevez’s baby boys would win the Pro Purse, as Robert, last week’s Pro Purse winner would take on his older brother TJ, who missed last week’s race due to a lacrosse tournament and who is competing in his final Jr dragster season, would face each other in the final. In typical brother fashion, they decided to go winner take all and not split the Pro Purse. TJ would win on a hole shot as both drivers would dial 7.90, with TJ going 7.914 on a .004 reaction time, to Robert’s 7.907 and a .026 reaction time. Robert was able to take over the points lead while TJ moved all the way to 8th.

MICHAEL HERMAN JR
MOTORCYCLE ET WINNER

The number 2 also followed our 2 wheel racers in motorcycle, as points leader Michael Herman Jr of Woodbridge, VA looked to do something that very few motorcycle racers had done, and that’s win back to back races to start the season. Taking on long time MIROCK racer Robbie "Superman" Hunnicutt, making his return to the Speed Unlimited ET Series, Herman would once again keep the theme of the day going, by winning his second consecutive race and further extending his points lead.

The Speed Unlimited Series takes a 3 week break for now and will return on May 11th for the 35th annual Mountain Motor Nationals, which will feature Pro Stocks running on the famed, "Throw Away the Rule Book, Run Whatcha Brung" style, Outlaw Pro Mods and $5,000 to win in Top ET on both days.
