Burnley Completes Comeback As Last Man Standing

July 18, 2013

Press Release courtesy of:  Fabian Brown

There's no doubt in anyone's mind that it takes a special person to drive a racecar. However, when you take a machine that makes over 2,500 horsepower, has a short wheelbase and inside the car temperatures are over 100 degrees, racecar drivers are no doubt, athletes. This couldn't be more true for a guy who builds his own racecars, Ed Burnley from Pasadena, MD. A former 2 time track champion, the veteran builder knows just about every inch of the world famous strip at MIR. However, a horrific crash a few years ago put him out of action for quite some time and nearly ended his career. After months of painful physical therapy and sheer determination, Burnley had one thing on his mind, conquer the Last Man Standing program at War On Wheels II.

With a unique, no qualifying, random elimination draw format, 8 of the best Pro Mod racers in the region came to MIR to withstand the heat. With this race rescheduled from one week earlier, every driver agreed the great fans of Maryland International Raceway who came out in the heat as well, deserved a show they'll remember for years to come. Names such as former winner Chuck Ulsch, Gerry Capano, Jeff Rodgers, TJ Dehaven and former track champions Larry Plummer and Matt Suite, whomever the Last Man standing was truly had to beat the heat, and the driver in the other lane.

After 1st round eliminations were completed, Ed Burnley got by Matt Suite by putting up the first 3 second run of the night with a 3.976. Not only did Ed have a target on his back for running in the 3's, but he was the only nitrous fed machine to make it out of first round, as TJ Dehaven eliminated Steve Szabolscky, Larry Plummer took out Jeff Rodgers, and Chuck Ulsch put Gerry Capano on the trailer. Round 2 random pairings saw two matchups that were definitely final round caliber. Plummer got the win over TJ Dehaven with a stout 4.092. The Burnley/Ulsch matchup determine if we would have a all supercharged final, or if Burnley would give the fans the classic Pro Mod war of Nitrous vs Blower. Ulsch got the starting line advantage, but Ed Burnley ripped off quickest pass of the night yet again with a 3.943, giving him lane choice in the final against his old rival and neighbor Larry Plummer.

As the final round approached, conditions had drastically improved from earlier in the day, meaning that with both cars capable of running in the 3 second zone, this final round would be one for the ages, The classic Pro Mod battle would go right down to the wire, as Larry Plummer ripped off a huge starting line advantage, going .003 on the Christmas tree to Burnley's .117. Burnley would not be denied as for the third pass in a row, he would go low et of the night with a off the chart 3.913, securing the win on his home racetrack and completing an emotional comeback. With his grandchildren, family and friends in the winner circle all smiling, it was without question that in Ed Burnley's mind, this was only just the beginning and he would be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
